American Idol and House delivered a strong one-two punch last night.  Their numbers easily earned another victory for .

  • (28.1 million, 11/27 in 18-49) remained in tune with last week’s figures.
  • * (11.7 million, 2.0/5) was down a smidge from one week ago.
  • (8.3 million, 3.3/8) lost 600,000 lbs from last Tuesday.
  • (4.9 million, 1.4/4) remained about even.
  • * (1.9 million, 0.8/2) retrieved 300,000 more souls.

MONDAY (1/28)

**Live coverage of the State of the Union Address (9 PM Eastern) will alter many schedules.  Double-check your local listings for times.**

  • Dance War (ABC, 8pm):  “One contestant from the losing team is ousted after the first round of competition.”  Those remaining will learn ‘I’m Still Standing’ routine.
  • Gossip Girl (CW, 8pm):  Pilot repeat.  Late-comers can finally learn why is this season’s guiltiest pleasure.  (And when I say ‘gossip’, I mean the show, of course.)
  • In Treatment (HBO, 9:30:  Series premiere.  New therapy drama airs 5x a week with a different patient every night.  Apparently can’t handle them all at once like the masterful Dr. Drew.
  • Making the Band 4 (MTV, 10pm):  brings back all the winners and throws them together in one house.  If they end up killing each other, he can finally start anew.

Although was still tops this Tuesday, the numbers for the San Diego auditions weren’t as sunny as last week.

  • (29 million, 11.7/29 in 18-49) was down 4 million from seven days ago.
  • * (12.2 million, 2.1/5) sunk about 3.7 million.
  • (8.9 million, 3.7/9) gained 1.7 million pounds.
  • (4.8 million, 1.4/4) saw a slight bump.
  • About 1.5 million danced with * (0.6/1) and the devil.

Although it had its lowest premiere since 2004, the reality phenom mowed down the competition:

Boston Legal

  • 33.2 million (13.8/32 in 18-49) downright embarrassed the competition.
  • 15.9 million (3.0/7) would have looked good on any other evening.
  • (7.2 million, 3.0/7) lost 3 million inches from last week.
  • (1.2/3) entertained just 4.52 million.
  • About 1.6 million welcomed * (0.6/2) in the new time slot.

  • About 12.5 million (2.4/6 in 18-49) continued on with the saga.
  • Both (4.1 million, 1.2/3) and (3.1 million, 0.9/2) were down about 400,000 from last week.
  • (2.7 million, 1.3/3) lost 800,000 from its two-hour debut.

MONDAY (1/7)
  • The View (ABC, check local listings):  returns from maternity leave.  I’d gladly sacrifice her to the union gods for an end to the .
  • Dance War: Bruno vs. Carrie Ann (ABC, 8pm):  Here’s our chance to see if the judges can actually teach what they preach.
  • American Gladiators (NBC, 8pm):  “In the men’s competition, an engineer takes on a radiation-control technician.”  The year of the nerd has now officially spilled over into 2008.
  • Medium (NBC, 10pm):  Season four premiere.  “Allison has creepy visions of a boy being kidnapped from a toy store.”  I never did trust that Geoffrey Giraffe.
  • Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations (Travel Channel, 10pm):  Anthony travels to Singapore for his latest season premiere.  I don’t like traveling with crusty people, but I love watching them venture on TV.
  • The Daily Show/The Colbert Report (Comedy Central, 11:30pm):  Tonight Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert will crank out their versions of a writer-less show.  God love ‘em for trying.

  • Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve 2008 (ABC, 10pm):  and will co-host the event.  Is old enough to be associated with a drinking holiday?
  • New Year’s Eve Live (FOX, 11pm):  Idol alums and will perform.  In just a few short weeks, we’ll start caring about a new batch of .
  • Tila Tequila’s New Year’s Eve Masquerade (MTV, 11pm):  NYC masked ball will include Kid Rock and Mary J. Blige.  Has it already been a year since we were forced to watch and kiss?
  • NBC’s New Year’s Eve With Carson Daly (NBC, 11:35pm):  Alicia Keys and Lenny Kravitz will be performing.  This may be the first time in a while someone has stayed awake to watch show.

  • (1.4 million, 0.6/2) did just as well as its lead-in.

  • (7.7 million, 2.1/6) saw a decrease of 1.3 million.

  • (NBC, 8pm):  This four-part series brings us Michael Bolton, Patti LaBelle, Nick Lachey and Kelly Rowland.  Surprisingly, this combo is not part of some program.
  • (ABC, 9pm):  “Eric must organize a baby party without ruining friendships.”  His pals are all hoping they don’t have to come.
  • (NBC, 10pm):  “Dan is sent to rescue a mother and son in an RV hanging from a cliff.”  Just for clarification—do his travels always predate the existence of 911?
